Turned Wood

Welcome to my turning page. Please scroll down for samples of some recent turnings.

Most of my turnings are meant to be functional, and all are finished in foodsafe materials. These include OSMO products designed specifically for contact with food, Tried And True wood finish, (a blend of mineral oil and beeswax), and pure mineral or vegetable oil and food-grade beeswax.

Caring for turned wood is easy; it can simply be rinsed with warm water and dried. Wood is naturally anti-microbial, and soap, although not harmful to wood, is generally not necessary unless it has been in contact with raw meat. In this case a drop of dish soap would be a good precaution. It is not necessary to re-treat items in regular use. However, any finishing oil (such as Cutting Board Oil) that states clearly that it is foodsafe is fine. Varnishes or other film finishes should not be used, as these finishes will crack and peel with use.

With care, these everyday items will last for years. However, wood being a ‘living’ material, some warping, and even cracking, is possible. Pieces that have been turned from green wood are often wavy, oval or otherwise misshapen. This is also a natural process, one to be celebrated.
